White Ball Poem
Here is a little bit of golf humor for you on this dreary Wednesday morning.... In my hand I hold a ball....white and dimpled, rather small.... Oh how bland it does appear.....this harmless looking little sphere... By its size I could not guess.....the awesome strength it does possess... But since I feel beneath its spell...I've wandered through the fires of hell.... My life has not been quite the same.....Since I chose to play this stupid game... It rules my mind for hours on end....A fortune it has made me spend.... It has made me swear and yell and cry....I hate myself and want to die.... It promises a thing called par....If I can hit straight and far.... To master such a tiny ball.....should not be very hard at all.... But my desires the ball refuses....and does exactly like it chooses.... It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies.....and even disappears before my eyes.... Often it will take a whim.....to hit a tree or take a swim.... With miles of grass on which to land....its finds a tiny patch of sand... Then has me offering up my soul....if only it would find the hole.... Its made me whimper like a pup....and swear that I will give it up... And take a drink to ease my sorrow....but the ball knows.....I'll be back tomorrow....

Letterman's Top Ten with Immelman
Since the Master's is right around the corner we thought we would share some humor today and bring back the Top Ten list from David Letterman read by Trevor Immelman after he won the Master's Golf Tournament.....Enjoy!!! 10. I've been elevated from "Unknown" to "Obscure" 9. Thanks to the prize money, I no longer have to buy generic rootbeer 8. Suddenly I don't look too foolish for trademarking "Immelmania" 7. I am BFFs with Lauren and Heidi from The Hills 6. President Bush called to congratulate me on winning Wimbledon 5. Born to Golf - Forced to Work
In our last blog we discussed getting our clubs ready to go for the golf season. Based on the winter that we just had all of you die hards probably already have your clubs ready to go and are just itching for some good spring weather to get out and tee it up.
Before you do that you might want to take a lesson, Even just a single one to help shake the rust off of things. Virtually every course that you go to offers lessons from qualified professionals. The typical lesson ranges from 30 minutes to an hour and sometimes include on course instructional time. Prices vary depending on the club and location but shop around to ensure you find the price that you are comfortable with.
If you haven't picked up your clubs since last fall it would be a good idea go out and hit the practice range, take a lesson just to make sure that you have not picked up any bad habits over the winter months and get you back on track faster and shooting those low scores. Golf is a challenging and expensive game but the upside is anyone can have fun when they go out to play a round of golf.
One of my favorite quotes from the Legend of Bagger Vance..."Golf is a game that can never be won....only played". When you think about it this is quite true. Golf in its truest form is simple an individual contest where you are pushing and working to see just how low you can go. There is no score you reach and you automatically win it is all about just shooting the lowest you can.
So start your season off right and get back into the swing of things the right way.

It is a new year
Wow a whole year has come and gone again. Spring is here, the trees are starting to bloom again. I can almost smell that fresh cut grass out on the course. It was a really cold winter here in DC and while the cold weather isn't quite gone yet it would be a great time for to get your sticks all ready to go for the new year.
Hopefully you haven't been storing your clubs all winter in a place where it was extremely cold or extremely hot. Extreme temperature changes can have an adverse affect on the expoxy bond that holds your shaft and club head together. For very similar reasons you should not store your golf clubs in your car all summer. Club repair technicians use heat to break the epoxy bond when doing club repair work. The amount of heat created in a car during the summer is more than enough to break the expoxy bond. When this bond is broken your club head will come off of the club shaft. This repair generally will cost a person between $10 and $15 per club. An expense that you just do not need and can be avoided.
The 2nd thing you want to take a look at before you get started this spring is your grips. Whether or not your grips need replaced could depend on a number of things like how you store your clubs, how often you play, grip pressure and so on. The key thing to look for is do you grips look as though they are worn, do they feel slippery? These are two very easy things to pick out.
Of course the next challenging decision is what grips to put on your clubs. Unfortunately there is no easy answer here. There are literally hundreds of grip styles, textures, thicknesses, feels and so forth. Your best bet is to schedule an appointment with a qualified club fitter who will: 1. be able to fit you to the proper size grip and 2. show you a wide variety of samples to help you make your selection.
Keeping your grips clean and fresh will ensure that you have a solid grip on your golf club. With out a solid grip it is very difficult to make a good swing at that little white ball. Until next time keep on swinging.

Re-Learning the Swing
If the game isn't hard enough as it is and who would think it is even hard. All you have to do is hit that little stationary white ball. Does not seem to be that hard but in reality it is one of the most difficult things in all of sports to do. Now imagine playing golf for 10 years or more and then deciding it is time to rebuild your entire swing from the ground up.
It almost seems impossible; gives you a really good appreciation for what most professionals seemingly do in just the off season period. I decided to write about this today after beginning the long road of rebuilding my swing about a month ago. As with anything there have been ups and downs and now I sit here and wonder is it even possible. Maybe that is not the right attitude but as I continue to search and work towards my ultimate goal of becoming a Class A PGA Professional I wonder if maybe I am just not cut out to reaching that goal.
I tend to think a lot of it is just in my mind after the beating I took at the PAT last October. It really has effected me mentally and I continue to search for something to help pull me out of that mental funk that will allow me to conquor my own inner demons.
So for those of you out there that specialize in golf instruction or sports psychology please give me your insights as I am looking to push myself to new levels and can use any help that I can get.

Looking ahead in 2010
So I have a few minutes here this morning and wanted to spend some time giving everyone a heads up on some of the things we have coming up in 2010. This year is going to be a really exciting year at Hilltop and I really think it will be one of the most exciting years yet at the club.
For those of you that don't know Hilltop Golf Club is privately owned and open to the public, although we do offer an assortment of membership packages for the die hard golf nuts out there. Over the course of the next few months you will begin seeing a transformation to a section of the covered and heated tees. While I don't want to let the suprise out too soon I think everyone will really enjoy the changes that we have planned this year and it will really make your learning, practicing and playing time much more enjoyable here at Hilltop.
Hilltop Golf Club is already one of the leading learn, practice and play facilities in Northern Virginia and this year we intend to capture the attention of golfer's and non-golfer's alike as begin offering more and more programming for the entire family. As the warmer month's arrive you will find events like our traditional product demo days partnered with wine tasting events or special events for the cigar lover's. Our events this year will be capped off with our outstanding summer camp program that is a huge hit with the junior's in the area each and every summer.
So if you have never tried golf there is a great opportunity for you to get hooked on the game at Hilltop Golf Club this year. We offer a great environment that is not initmidating to help you get started on the right foot.
